Laboratory Assistant

The Laboratory Assistant will be part of the Laboratory Operations Team. As a key team member you will be focusing on sample receipt, sample queries, sample assigning and sample preparation. You will support all aspects of Laboratory operations and will collaborate with both internal and external cross functional teams to ensure the highest quality genotype data is delivered to the customer and ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with the Quality Management System (QMS) in place.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Receiving in high volumes of samples and inputting sample ID’s into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Segregating samples based on different priority categories define by the customer.
  • Recording sample numbers and types received on a daily basis. Labelling, sorting, storing and retrieving samples when required.
  • Preparing samples, primarily eartag and hair samples for DNA extraction in lines with Standard Operating Procedures.
  • To ensure all quality checks are conducted to the highest standard to ensure sample integrity throughout the sample receipt and sample preparation processes has been maintained.
  • Processing samples in the necessary timeframe to ensure that required turnaround times for reporting results are achieved.
  • Identifying and reporting non-conforming work to line manager and support the necessary root cause investigation and close out of Technical Errors/Non-Conformances when required.
  • Maintaining and suggesting improvements to sample management and storage systems. Processing samples in order of highest priority to ensure turnaround times for samples are achieved.
  • Assisting and supporting with the training of other Laboratory staff in sample receipt and sample preparation procedures.
  • Supporting the QMS by ensuring that working practice are in line with ISO17025 standards and/or other relevant accreditations.
  • Adhering to all relevant health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Completing all documentation in line with Good Documentation Practice.
  • Monitoring stock levels.
  • All of these roles are for December and January start dates. Contracts will range from 3 to 6 month duration. Candidates will be working days only.
