The Downstream Strategy & Planning Engineer will join the Investment & Portfolio Analysis Division within the Downstream Strategy and Capital Planning Department. This department is responsible for coordinating and supporting the development of the organization’s Downstream Investment Plan and Strategy. It also provides quantitative input to the Downstream Executive Committees, working in close cooperation with other Strategy & Capital Planning divisions across the organization. The primary role of the Downstream Strategy & Planning Engineer is to provide quantitative analysis and ensure the strategic fit of the Downstream Investment Plan.
Responsibilities
- Provide techno-economic analysis on a variety of downstream opportunities, with a focus on integrated refining and petrochemicals assets, and their interaction with downstream segments such as trading and retail within the hydrocarbon value chain. Evaluate these opportunities for alignment with the organization’s downstream strategy.
- Develop quantitative analysis on sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) implications for the Downstream Investment Plan, particularly focusing on emissions and product carbon footprint evaluations.
- Collaborate with various downstream business units and other corporate functions to establish and update investment analysis criteria.
- Provide commercial and technical expertise in executing the downstream strategy, including appraisal of strategic options, identification of trade-offs, and implementation planning.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical Engineering or related field. An MBA or relevant advanced degree is strongly preferred.
- A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in operations, technology, and business development, with a strong record of economic and commercial evaluations of downstream opportunities. Experience in refining, petrochemicals, as well as other sectors like trading, retail, and low-carbon energy solutions.
- Proficiency in asset techno-economic modeling and optimization tools (e.g., PIMS, Petroplan), as well as experience in data management from major downstream and industry consulting entities (e.g., IHS, WoodMac, Rystad).
- Strong knowledge of major refining and chemical process technologies, including recent sustainability developments in areas like decarbonization, circularity, and non-fossil feedstocks.
- A deep understanding of global energy markets and trends, with an external perspective and a robust professional network.
- Ideally, experience working in international and multicultural environments.
